Mike Caro's Contribution to Poker
In the world of poker, there are a large number of notable individuals. One of them is Mike Caro. Born in Joplin, Montana in May 16, 1944, Mike Caro is a professional poker player as well as one of the pioneers of poker theory.
He has also written a number of books on the subject of poker. He has also made a number of poker videos that often serve as companion material for some of his books. For example, "Mike Caro's Book of Poker Tells" comes with a companion DVD or video. He has also contributed to what is considered the first and most authoritative book on poker strategy, Doyle Brunson's "Super/System." Mike Caro contributed fifty statistical tables to the book, and also wrote one of the book's chapters; the chapter on draw poker.
As a professional poker player, he has not won any World Series of Poker bracelets or any World Poker Tour titles, but he is one of the premier authorities on poker theory and gameplay, and he continues to be a strong and influential voice in the world of poker and gambling in general. Case in point: Mike Caro was once "Poker Player" magazine's editor in chief, and a senior editor for "Gambling Times" magazine.
He had also founded the world's first poker school; the Mike Caro University of Poker, Gambling and Life Strategy, and helped develop one of the first commercial computer programs for poker situation analysis; "Poker Probe." During the 1990s, in the dawn of the internet era, Mike Caro was one of the first people in the world to say that online poker using real money could potentially become a hugely successful venture; so successful, in fact, that eventually, more people would play online poker than face-to-face poker.
Among Mike Caro's other poker contributions, he was the one who wrote the first ever computer program for AI poker; Orac. Orac is "Caro" spelled backwards, and he demonstrated this particular program at the World Series of Poker in 1984. Because poker is a game that often depends on probability, statistics, and analysis, the program played surprisingly well against other poker professionals.
Today, Caro continues to play poker, and now serves as a consultant for a number of casinos by calculating for the odds of certain games. During its earliest years, the Bicycle Casino in Las Vegas had Mike Caro as its chief strategist. He also helped organize the first corporate sponsored poker tournament, the 1992 "Word Poker Finals."
